Everything You Need to Know About THC

Next time if you feel high after taking a product with marijuana (for those who live in US states and countries where the medical and recreational use of cannabis is legal), you should know that a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible.  THC is what causes the psychoactive effect of marijuana. This is one of the most popular of the 113 cannabinoids in the cannabis sativa plant.

THC was first isolated by scientists Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni. Since then, a lot of research has been conducted into this psychoactive chemical. However, despite the growing awareness, there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions about THC.

For instance, many people still assume that even the smallest amount of THC can have a mind altering effect.

So Why Does THC Have a Psychoactive Effect?

So why does THC have the psychoactive effects that most marijuana users crave for? According to scientific studies, THC arouses our cells in the brain to produce an organic compound called dopamine, which is what causes that euphoric feeling. THC also affects the hippocampus, which is one of the parts of our brain that creates and stores new memories.

Risks and Adverse Effects of THC

Since THC is a highly psychoactive chemical, excessive consumption of it can have a huge risk. It can have adverse effects on our physical and mental health. Some of the major side-effects of overdosing on THC include:

  • Short-term memory problems
  • Hallucination and delusion
  • Impaired memory
  • Panic-prone behavior
  • Inflates heart rate (thereby increasing the risk of heart attack & stroke)
  • Sexual problems (especially for males)
  • Dry mouth
  • Insomnia

Does THC Have Any Medicinal Properties?

Although THC is, a psychoactive chemical, it also has some amazing health benefits. Studies show that if used in the right proportion in medicinal solutions, THC can contribute to resolving many health ailments. This includes preventing nausea, vomiting, increasing appetite, improving memory and curing inflammation. Many people would be surprised to know that THC has medical properties.

This chemical has also been found to be beneficial in the prevention of fatal diseases like cancer. However, further research is needed into the therapeutic qualities of THC.

It is also important to note that people should not excessively consume marijuana in a bid to enjoy the health benefits of THC. It is critical to remember that THC’s supposed health benefits are mostly derived after integrating it with other compounds.

What About the Presence of THC in CBD Oil

It is well-known that THC is present in CBD oil. Therefore, does it make CBD oil psychoactive? Logically, the answer should be ‘yes.’ However, the actual answer is a big ‘no.’

This is because THC is only present in minimal quantities in CBD oil. CBD is derived from industrial hemp. This cannabis cultivar contains only traces of THC. There is only about 0.3% to 0.5% of THC in industrial hemp. Meanwhile, the normal cannabis plant contains 33% to 35% of THC.
